MORPETH SECONDARY SCHOOL

(BREEAM MAN 9 PROJECT INFORMATION)

 

Project Description:

The Morpeth Secondary School is a comprehensive school with 8 forms of entry and approximately 1200 students, to be refurbished and extended as part of the LB Tower Hamlets BSF Programme.  The main features of the proposed design are:

·    Three new buildings of varying heights consisting of flexible teaching spaces, a large flexible community space, a large SEN base and pastoral hub, and enhanced music facilities.

·    Various renovations and alterations to retained buildings.

·    Enhanced ICT provision throughout.

·    Improvements to external landscaping, including 2 new multi-use games areas.

 

BREEAM Rating & Score:

The proposed design will achieve a BREEAM rating of “Very Good” with a minimum score of 55 credits.

 

Key Innovative & Low-Impact Design Features:

·    Thermal insulation values that meet or exceed Building Regulation requirements for new-build areas, as well as numerous fabric improvements to retained areas.

·    Maximising use of daylighting and natural ventilation where possible.

·    Use of automatic daylight dimming, local user and zoned lighting controls where possible.

·    Local user temperature controls.

External Works Cost:  £204/m2

Predicted Electricity Consumption:  27.6KWh/m2

 

Predicted Fossil Fuel Consumption:  Gas: 38.8KWh/m2

 

Predicted Renewable Energy Generation:  6.0KWh/m2

 

Predicted Water Use:  3.8m3/pers/yr

 

% of Rainwater / Greywater:

No rainwater harvesting or greywater systems are proposed.

 

Steps to Reduce Construction Impacts:

·    The project phasing, decanting, temporary accommodation, and hoarding have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to the school and maintain segregation between the school and construction activities throughout the works.

·    Implementation of measures under the Considerate Contractor’s Scheme.

·    Minimisation and monitoring of noise, dust, and water discharge.

·    Segregation of construction waste.

 

Social / Economic Sustainability Measures:

·    Sustainable technologies employed as a learning resource through interfaces between the school’s ICT and Building Management systems.

·    Additional and enhanced community facilities, including the MUGA’s and ETTA.

·    Reduced car parking and additional cycle parking.
